The short answer: FBR has extended the income tax return filing deadline for Tax Year 2026 to October 31, 2026. If you were supposed to file by September 30 and haven't yet, you now have only a few days left. File before the deadline to keep your filer status on the Active Taxpayer List - missing it means penalties and higher withholding taxes as a non-filer.

What exactly happened: the deadline timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| September 30, 2026 | Original statutory filing deadline for Tax Year 2026 |
| September 30, 2026 | FBR extends it to October 15 (Circular No. 3 of 2026-27) |
| October 15, 2026 | FBR extends it again to October 31 (Circular No. 04 of 2026-27, under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001) |
This is the second extension in a month. FBR granted it after requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations, who pointed to technical glitches in the IRIS online filing portal and delays in the new return forms. The announcement came through FBR's official channels - so if you heard the deadline was October 15, that information is now outdated.
Who must file before October 31
The extension covers everyone who was required to file by September 30, 2026. In practice, that means:
- Salaried individuals whose annual income crosses the taxable threshold - even if tax was already deducted from your salary every month, you still have to file the return yourself.
- Freelancers and the self-employed, including IT exporters on the PSEB 0.25% regime.
- Business owners, traders and shopkeepers - non-salaried filers are actually leading this year's surge.
- Anyone who owns property or vehicles above the threshold, or who wants to stay on the Active Taxpayer List.
Not sure whether your salary even attracts tax? Run your salary through the Tax Calculator Pakistan - under the 2026-27 slabs a Rs 100,000 salary is only Rs 500/month in tax, but you still need to file.
5 things to do before October 31
- Gather your documents today. Salary slips for the full year, bank statements, and proof of any other income (rent, freelance payments, profit on savings). Most filing delays are document hunts, not form problems.
- Reconcile your declared income with your tax calculation. Run your salary through the Tax Calculator Pakistan and compare it with what your employer deducted. If the numbers don't match, find out why before you submit - our complete salary-tax guide walks through the full slab method.
- File on IRIS, and don't wait for October 31. The whole reason FBR extended the deadline was heavy traffic and glitches on the IRIS portal. Filing on the last day is exactly how people end up missing it. Aim for this week.
- Keep your acknowledgment. After e-filing, IRIS issues a submission acknowledgment - save the PDF. It's your proof of filing if anything is disputed later.
- Confirm your filer status afterward. Once your return is processed, check that your name appears on the Active Taxpayer List. That's what actually protects you from non-filer withholding rates.
Solving the #1 IRIS roadblock: The Wealth Statement trap
Every year, thousands of filers get stuck on the final submission screen with a cryptic error: "Unreconciled Amount must be zero". In IRIS, filing your income return requires simultaneously filing your Wealth Statement (Section 116).
To pass validation without an accountant, remember the simple balance equation:
Current Year Net Assets = Previous Year Net Assets + Inflows - Outflows
Inflows: Net annual salary, freelance earnings, remittances, bank profits, gifts.
Outflows: Annual household expenses, utility bills, taxes deducted, education and travel costs.
If Code 70999 shows an unreconciled balance, your declared personal expenses do not match the net change in your assets and bank balance. Adjust your personal expenditure line until the discrepancy becomes zero.
What happens if you miss October 31
Two consequences, and both cost money:
- Penalties under the Income Tax Ordinance. Late filing attracts penalties that grow with the delay - and unlike the deadline, they don't get extended. Under Section 182, late filing penalties start at 0.1% of tax payable per day of default. Furthermore, under Section 182A, if you file late you are excluded from the Active Taxpayer List until you pay an ATL surcharge (Rs 1,000 for salaried individuals) via a separate CPR challan.
- You drop off the filer list. Under the 10th Schedule, non-filers face significantly higher withholding tax rates on everyday transactions: bank withdrawals exceeding Rs 50,000, vehicle registration and transfer, property deals (up to 10-15% vs 3% for filers), and even mobile top-ups. For most salaried people, staying a filer is worth far more than the few hours filing takes.
The numbers: Pakistan is filing more than ever
FBR's own data shows this is a record year: 6.71 million returns filed by October 14, up 34% from 4.99 million last year. Salaried filers rose 16% to 2.178 million, and non-salaried filers - traders, professionals, the self-employed - surged 46%. Tax paid along with returns reached Rs 66.81 billion. The trend is clear: the filer net is widening every year, and staying outside it gets more expensive, not less.
Frequently asked questions
Is October 31 the final deadline, or will FBR extend again?
Nobody knows for sure - FBR has already extended twice this season. However, senior tax authorities and compliance targets under national fiscal agreements make further extensions unlikely. Treat October 31 as final. Previous extensions were granted only hours before expiration, and relying on another extension risks severe non-filer penalties.
I already paid tax through salary deduction. Do I still need to file?
Yes, absolutely. Monthly employer withholding is merely an advance tax deduction under Section 149. Only submitting your annual return on IRIS formally discharges your legal obligation, reconciles differences, and maintains your active status on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL).
What if the IRIS portal crashes or throws session errors when I try to file?
Portal load is exactly why FBR issued the extension. During the final 72 hours, hundreds of thousands of filers log in simultaneously. To avoid crashes, log into IRIS early in the morning (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM) or late at night (after 11:00 PM), save each draft tab progressively, and keep screenshots with timestamps if you experience server timeout errors.
I am a freelancer paid from abroad. Does this deadline apply to me?
Yes, if you are a tax resident in Pakistan. Freelancers registered with the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) benefit from a concessional 0.25% final tax rate on export remittances under Section 154A (1% without PSEB). You must file your return and declare your foreign export proceeds alongside bank Proceed Realization Certificates (PRCs).
How do I fix the 'Unreconciled Amount' error in the Wealth Statement?
IRIS will not allow final submission until the 'Unreconciled Amount' under Code 70999 is exactly 0. Your formula must balance: Previous Year Net Assets + Inflows (Salary, Freelancing, Bank Profit, Remittances) - Outflows (Personal & Household Expenses, Taxes Paid) = Current Year Net Assets. If there is a residual figure, reconcile your expense entries until the difference clears.
